Are there things we should avoid? Yes, we avoid phrases like "get well soon." Not every patient in chemo is actually going to get "well." We also avoid the pink ribbon because we do not ask patients what type of cancer they have. We prefer the lavender ribbon which represents all cancers.
Will donations and projects be given to patients where I live? YES! Chemo Buddies is a local charity that serves patients at treatment centers in Evansville and Newburgh, Indiana as well as Henderson, Kentucky. You can see more about all of our locations under the "Contact Us" tab at the top.
Will you supply seed money for a project? Yes, in fact our largest fundraiser was a school dance, that started with a monetary gift from their PTA. If you are lucky enough to find money elsewhere, we will match it within reason!
Do teachers have to come up with their own ideas to apply for the grant? We want to encourage everyone to think big, however, no one has to start at "ground zero" and make up something completely new. There are many ideas that are repeatable on our Educators page.
When do you need seasonal projects? Patients love seasonal gifts so holiday themed projects can be a great idea. We just need the projects about 2 weeks in advance to make sure that we can get the treats to all of our facilities by the time the holiday comes around.
What exactly does a Chemo Buddy do in the treatment room? Chemo Buddies are volunteers that keep patients company, and help with any comfort needs. Frequently patients receiving chemotherapy cannot get up to roam around during their hours-long treatments, so Chemo Buddies can get them anything from food and snacks to blankets and iPads. Additionally each patient gets a welcome bag on their first day. It contains some candy to combat metal mouth, puzzle books, and a blanket. Check out our mothership for more information.
